Artist Biography and Professional Experiences

   

With pen names, A-Fu (1997-2003) and Huang Chin-Fu (2008-), Huang Chin-Fu has published many works and articles. Graduated from the Department of Fine Arts, Tunghai University in 1992, Huang obtained his MFA from the same university in 2001, and later, continued his study in Spain in September, 2002. In 2007, he received his Diploma of Profound Studies (DEA) with notable grades and acquired the status of Ph.D. Candidate, and eventually received his Ph.D. in Contemporary Art Studies with apto cum laude from Universidad de Castilla la Mancha, Spain.

 

Huang started working as an executive editor for Hot Art Monthly in Kaohsiung in 1994. Because of his editorial work at the magazine, he continued to have opportunities to publish photography series, such as Culturalize Love Canal and Bodies of the Studio. In August, 1995, he moved to Tainan and became the person in charge of Tainan Contemporary Painting Studio as well as a contributing writer for Hot Art Monthly in Tainan. In 1996, he won the Innovative Ceramics Prize with the work, South‧The Urn of Sima, in the 1st Taipei County Ceramic Art Exhibition, and participated in the exhibition, Tainan—Phenomenon, with other Tainan artists at Wu's Garden in Tainan. It was during this period that he began to contemplate on the combination of contemporary art and the ancient city as well as urban observation. Afterwards, he worked for New Art Space in Tainan as a writer and coordinator, starting his field observation and exploration of local cultural affairs after he moved to Tainan. During his time at New Art Space, he organized and coordinated the Tainan Film Festival and Environmental Art Festival—Thoughts about the Canal, and assisted to curate Phoenix 1000—Reconstructing the City of Phoenix. In March, 1997, he won the First Prize of Kaohsiung Award with the work, The Incomprehensible Cranial Nerve. In June of the same year, he traveled to Boston, USA to participated in A Tale of Two Cities: Interchange Program of Contemporary Art Between Tainan and Boston—Phase I, and worked as a project manager and writer for the program.

 

In 1998, Huang transformed his role in a challenging way, hoping to change his work from an administrative position of project coordination and textual documentation to an observer and artist that focused on exploring and discovering more future possibilities. The reason he initiated this change was because he has always been making art and paying attention to the relationship between art-making and urban observation. He understood that whether writing, image documentation, or one's creative language all came from the "originality" in human civilization and the historic city he lived in, which could also be found in his own artistic thinking. To observe the city and discover the remnants of urban civilization was the most significant topic that promised most potentiality for him. In April, 1998, he was awarded a grant by the National Culture and Arts Foundation, which enabled him to realize the solo exhibition, A Traveler Reaching a Beautiful City—A-Fu Solo Exhibition, at New Art Space in Tainan; and later, in October, he was awarded with "The Vermont Studio Center Freeman Fellowship" and started a three-month artist residency in the US.

 

In 1999, Huang began studying at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tunghai University while continuing to present solo exhibitions, including One Beer Costs NT$500—A-Fu Solo Exhibition in 2000 and The Flaneur—A-Fu Solo Exhibition in 2001. In 2003, after Chaos Underworld—A-Fu Solo Exhibition at SinPinPier Art Space, he started studying in Spain, and was accepted into the Ph.D. program of Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha, specializing in contemporary art studies.

 

In 2007, he passed the dissertation defense for Ph.D. candidacy with notable grades and received the DEA. During his study in Spain, Huang focused on the academic research and study of document aesthetics in contemporary art as well as the documentary and artistic characteristics of photographic documents. He also continuously published articles related to these topics in art magazines and journals, such as Artco, Artist, Journal of Taipei Fine Arts Museum, etc. In 2011, he was offered a position of lecturer at the Department of Fine Arts, Tainan University of Technology; and in July, 2012, he successfully received the Ph.D. degree in Contemporary Art Studies from Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha.

 

In 2013, Huang resumed his artistic creation, which had been suspended for a decade while he pursued an academic career. Since then, he has continued in paying attention to the topic of "the society of spectacles" that involves issues of social phenomenon, environmental landscape, and urban aesthetics. Through his exploration, he has hoped to expand his interpretation of contemporary social culture and aesthetic study through the power of art. His creative work and thinking during this period also emphasized on the spectacles in the everyday life as well as contradictions and tension regarding the meaning of life precipitated by the society of spectacles. With artistic works based on this concept, Huang was accepted by the 7th International Residency Program hosted by Shangyuan Art Museum in Beijing in 2014 as well as the International Artist-in-Residency Program hosted by Inside-Out Art Museum in Beijing, China. During the contemplative time in Beijing, he has created a series of new works after eleven years, which he entitled, City Story Series. He was invited to show this series in the thematic section, "Representing Society," in Yes, Taiwan: 2014 Taiwan Biennial organized by National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.
